Summary

In Early Years, we already understand the importance of working in partnership with parents to achieve the best outcomes for the children we are working with.

However, this becomes even more important when we are working with children who are not meeting their developmental targets or have a Special Educational Need and/or Disability. The principles underpinning the SEND Code of Practice (2015) (section 19 of the Children and Families Act 2014) makes it clear that the voice of the parent MUST be included in any decisions made about the child’s care therefore settings must have regard to the views, wishes and feelings of the child and their parents/ carers and include them fully in the decision making process.

This short course will discuss the following:

•         How to have initial conversations with parents/carers regarding children that are not meeting their expected levels of development

•         Thoughts about parents/ carers feelings when their child may have SEND

•         The tools we can use to assist our conversation with parents/ carers about making future plans for their children to achieve the best possible outcomes

•         Following the Assess, Plan, Do, Review Cycle

•         Involving external agencies in the child’s care

•         The SEND Code of Practice (2015) and the inclusion of the Parent’s Voice
