Revised charges for supporting NQT processes - Statutory NQT Support

Determining the appropriate body

Paragraphs 2.20  and 2.21 of the  NQT Statutory induction states that

Independent quality assurance of statutory induction, through the role of the appropriate body, is important both for ensuring that schools provide adequate support for their NQTs, and that their assessment is fair and consistent across all institutions.

An NQT cannot start their induction until their appropriate body has been agreed. The chart below identifies the organisations that can act as the appropriate body for particular institutions. In the absence of another body acting as appropriate body for a school, the local authority in which the school is situated should be asked to be the appropriate body for that school.

Southwark Local Authority can act as your Appropriate Body to NQTs in your school.

Typically, our service will include:

  • registration on our on-line support system NQT manager
  • secure database where all documentation attached to induction can be kept securely
  • administration and liaison with the Teaching Agency and DfE as appropriate;
  • access to Local Authority resources through NQT manager and our website
  • work by the LA NQT Panel to monitor and approve the induction period including the review of formal assessments
  • electronic copy of the advice and guidance files provided to NQTs and Induction Tutors
  • an opportunity for your Induction Tutor to attendour Local Authority Induction Tutor briefing (charges apply) – at least one tutor from your organisation must attend an Induction Tutor briefing per year
  • an opportunity for your NQT to attend our Induction conference (charges apply)
  • telephone and email support
  • monitoring of theSchool Induction programme
  • consultancy support and advice for any NQT at risk of failing induction

Any Southwark Maintained/ School requesting the local authority to take on the role of Appropriate Body must ensure that the NQT post meets the requirements of a suitable post for Induction.

Charging by the appropriate body

Paragraph 2.23 of the NQT Statutory Induction Guidance states that

2.23 The appropriate body may make reasonable charges (agreed in advance), not exceeding the cost of supplying the service as follows:

  • To an independent school; an academy; a free school; a city technology college; a BSO; an independent nursery school; or a further education institution to which it is supplying the service
  • To any maintained school or institution (from 1 September 2013)
