Local authority governor appointment process
Overview
The Constitution (England) Regulations 2012 state that "the governing body of a maintained school must include one local authority governor.”
The Local Authority (LA) has a duty to nominate local authority governors, while the formal decision to appoint rests with the Governing Board.
An LA governor is someone suitably appointed with LA approval, but their role is not to represent the LA in any way. When making the appointment the governing body must consider whether the candidate has the required skills. The governing body can set any eligibility criteria they wish.
Making a nomination
We welcome proposals for nominations for suitable candidates from our schools. The Chair and/Headteacher should meet with any suitable candidate to discuss the role in more detail – they will want to make sure they have the right person for the school and it is equally important that potential candidates make sure that school and governing board is the right fit for them too.
If the candidate is successful then please complete the application form (docx, 58kb) and send to Donna-Marie.Muir@southwark.gov.uk. (Head of Service). The Head of Service will review your proposal and, if deemed suitable, will formally submit the form to the Director of Children's Services. If there are any issues, the Head of service will respond with queries and advise on the selection process.
Following this confirmation, the appointment of the governor will take place at your next Full Governing Board. This is when their term will start.
Do ensure you check your LA governor’s term of office and submit your proposal well in advance in order to ensure it is submitted to the Director of Children's Services without delay.
