This online training consists of a two‑part programme aimed primarily at teachers working in Year 1. To support a coherent and sustainable approach to transition, it is also highly beneficial for EYFS leaders, Reception teachers or KS1 phase leaders to attend alongside Year 1 staff. Their involvement can help ensure a shared understanding and support the development of an effective, whole‑school approach to transition.

Summary

Session 1: Understanding Transition from EYFS to Year 1

This session will explore the key research evidence around effective transition from the EYFS into Year 1 and the impact this has on children’s wellbeing, engagement, and outcomes. We will explore what changes there are to a child’s development from Reception to Year 1, look at the EYFS statutory framework, including end-of-year assessment processes and expectations, and consider how EYFS principles and practice should inform Year 1 provision.

Session 2: Putting Transition into Practice

This session will have a strong practical focus, looking closely at how Year 1 teachers can support children’s emotional wellbeing, independence, and learning behaviours during the transition period. Participants will explore effective classroom practice, including organisation of the learning environment, daily routines, adult‑child interactions, and planning approaches that promote continuity from the EYFS. We are very fortunate to be joined by colleagues from Keyworth and Grange Primary Schools, who will share how they have developed and embedded an effective transition approach from the EYFS into Year One. They will discuss what has worked well, the challenges encountered and answer any questions you may have.
