Aims

How can schools develop pupils who are not only accurate and efficient with number, but also confident, adaptable mathematicians? This session will explore the vital relationship between arithmetic and mathematical fluency, helping subject leaders to strengthen provision across all phases and year groups.

Together, we will examine what fluency really means in mathematics, moving beyond quick-fire recall to consider procedural confidence, conceptual understanding and the ability to select and adapt strategies in different contexts. Participants will explore approaches to teaching arithmetic that promote understanding alongside efficiency, ensuring that procedures support, rather than replace, mathematical thinking.

This network meeting offers the opportunity to reflect on current practice, exchange ideas with colleagues and leave with actionable strategies to support lasting improvements in arithmetic and fluency across your school.
