Sickness return

Schools have a statutory duty to notify their local authority when a pupil is likely to miss 15 days (consecutive or cumulative) due to illness.

This duty is set out under Regulation 13(9) School Attendance (Pupil Registration) (England) Regulations 2024. The School Attendance (Pupil Registration) (England) Regulations 2024

The purpose of the return is to ensure:

  • the school and council can jointly agree provision for children unable to attend due to illness
  • the council can assess whether Section 19 obligations may be triggered.

This form is for schools when a pupil:

  • is recorded as absent with code I (illness)
  • is expected to be, or has been, unable to attend school for at least 15 school days in the school year (consecutive or not).
