About Southwark School Food Improvement
Support for Breakfast Clubs
It is important for pupils to start the day with a nutritious breakfast. Evidence shows that providing a healthy school breakfast at the start of the school day can contribute to improved readiness to learn, increased concentration, and improved wellbeing and behaviour. In 2025, the government announced that they are rolling out free breakfast clubs in all primary schools. We are supporting Southwark schools through this transition through sharing guidance, carrying out visits to breakfast clubs and online drop in sessions.
Visits
We are visiting breakfast clubs in Southwark to understand which adaptations may be needed to meet the new requirements from the government free breakfast club scheme. We are also visiting Early Adopter Schools as they join onto the scheme in phases. If you have any questions about the government free breakfast club scheme and what you need to do to prepare, contact schoolfood@southwark.gov.uk to organise a visit.
