Aims

"Social emotional learning (SEL) is a methodology that helps students of all ages to better comprehend their emotions, to feel those emotions fully, and demonstrate empathy for others."

Social and Emotional Learning is such an important part of children and young people's development. Being able to understand the emotions they are feeling and why they are feeling can help them to become more aware of themselves, as well as their peers. 

That is why at Southwark, we will be holding a session on Building Resilience Through Social and Emotional Learning, encompassing: 

  • Session: Why social and emotional learning?  And Understanding trauma, neuroscience, and learning
    • This session will focus on why SEL is important? Your experience, thoughts, and ideas. The impact of social and emotional learning on life skills and personal and academic success. The close relationship between social and emotional learning and the development of resilience and positive mental health.
    • This session is centered on Understanding barriers to learning Identifying vulnerability and risk, as well as examining the link between trauma, the brain and learning in the classroom. We will also be exploring some useful strategies and resources
  • Pre- and post- course reading and actions: Putting it into practice
    • This is focused on developing the whole classroom/school and integrated approach to social and emotional learning/developing resilience, exploring useful resources and programmes and everyday strategies for the classroom, and reflecting on our current provision and approach and making plans for improvement and implementation.

Summary

This course has been designed specifically for Early Career Teachers (ECTs) & New Qualified Teachers (+1, +2, +3, +4). The content has been adapted to ensure that ECTs and NQTs maximise their learnings which can be effectively implemented into the classroom.
