Aims

By the end of the session, participants will:

  1. Understand what diversity looks like in early years settings and why early exposure to inclusive values matters.
  2. Recognise how unconscious bias can affect interactions, expectations, and assessments, and reflect on personal practice.
  3. Learn practical strategies for creating inclusive environments, including resources, celebrations, and language use.
  4. Develop approaches for working respectfully with families from diverse backgrounds and navigating cultural sensitivities.
  5. Explore theoretical frameworks (Bronfenbrenner, Anti-Bias Education, UNCRC) that underpin inclusive practice.
  6. Feel confident in supporting children’s identity and self-expression in safe, respectful ways.

Summary

This interactive session will explore how early years practitioners and managers can create inclusive environments that respect and celebrate diversity. We will look at practical strategies, theoretical frameworks, and reflective exercises to support children’s identity, belonging, and participation. The training will cover unconscious bias, inclusive resources, cultural sensitivity, and effective communication with families, helping practitioners embed equality and respect into everyday practice.
