Aims

For Managers and DSL's in group based early years settings, this advanced safeguarding and child protection THREE day programme brings together the main componants of the EYFS (23) safeguarding requirements. 

Day 1: Recognising, responding and referring to child abuse in early years

  • To build on their own and to support their colleagues in developing their existing knowledge in identifying children at risk of harm or maltreatment 
  • Review in detail the Southwark Threshold guidance to gain a better understanding of appropriate referrals.
  • To use serious case reviews as the basis for identifying how the Assessment Framework (2000)  can assist in identifying risk and protective factors for children and their families

Day 2: The role of the Designated Safeguarding Lead

  • Understanding the role of the designated safeguarding lead/officer and the key areas of responsibility
  • Identifying and responding to different categories of harm and abuse and managing disclosures in the context of safeguarding children.
  • Reviewing the key legislation and guidance affecting your response to concerns about a child's safety or welfare

Day3: Safer Recruitment

  • Pre-recruitment planning: Job descriptions, person specification and creating the right job advert
  • Candidate selection and obtaining the correct checks and references
  • Post recruitment activities, including induction, peer observation and supervision.

           Managing Allegations

  • What an allegation is in the early years settings and the actions to be taken when an allegation is made against you or a staff member, including how to carry out the initial enquiries, the investigation and the employment, child protection and criminal processes that may need to be pursued.
  • The roles of the different agencies when an allegation has been made, including that of the Local Authority Designated Officer (LADO), Ofsted, Health and the Police.
  • What makes an organisation / setting safe and best practice to avoid allegations

This three day programme will faciliate a forum for managers and DSL’s to come together with their peers to refresh and extend their safeguarding knowledge and practice:
