DfE’s new national training for your school’s “Mental Health & Wellbeing Lead” (twilight sessions), the core training objectives are to:
• Build understanding of evidence-based and straightforward responses and resources to support recovery.
• Develop knowledge to introduce school and college staff to evidence-based and straightforward resources and structures for dissemination to children and young people and parents and carers.
• Raise awareness of specialist and wider support services (statutory and independent) and when and how education professionals might signpost or refer children and young people, staff and/or parents and carers to them.
• Increase knowledge of the potential mental health and wellbeing impact of Covid-19 on staff, children and young people, and parents and carers.

Coronavirus and children and young people’s mental health
Researchers are trying to use existing evidence to understand what this potential impact is and how best to support young people at this time - in the Emerging Evidence series, we search for evidence from around the world during the current coronavirus pandemic that might help us begin to explore some specific questions
- The 'new normal': The future of education after Covid–19
The Covid-19 pandemic has resulted in an unprecedented disruption to schools and learners in England. There has been significant focus on ‘recovering’ the existing system but there is also an opportunity to ‘build back better’. This research has identified three areas where the pandemic has the potential to open up new conversations about the future of schooling in England.

Drug and Alcohol Education

While a minority of young, multiracial working-class Londoners caught up in serious youth violence are schooled in the Pupil Referral Units (PRUs) and Alternative Provision (AP) that forms part of the ‘PRU-to-prison pipeline’; little is known about how the education system for the excluded came about. The IRR’s new paper, How Black Working-Class Youth are Criminalised and Excluded in the English School System: A London Case Study, reveals that over the past forty years, exclusion from mainstream school has coincided with systematic ‘educational enclosure’.
