Teacher Resources & Remote Learning
Learning in Lockdown
For the second time in less than a year, the COVID-19 pandemic has forced schools to close for most children, with the majority of children once again learning remotely. During the first lockdown, research from the Sutton Trust found that children’s experiences of remote learning varied substantially across different socio-economic backgrounds. There is a risk that years of work to reduce the attainment gap and tackle social mobility could be undone in just a few months. The report also looks at how the impacts of the pandemic on education and social mobility can be minimised.

Support for Schools

We have published a series of resources to help support staff and to provide them with information about how to work with children and young people, include those with SEN, and materials to share with parents and carers.

Build Back Fairer: The COVID-19 Marmot Review

The impact of being long-term disadvantaged at KS2 and KS4
We’ve been writing for a number of years about the relationship between attainment and the amount of time pupils have been eligible for free school meals. We have also shown how this varies by ethnic background and how geographic differences in disadvantage and ethnic background (rather than school effectiveness) largely account for regional differences in attainment.
So we’re now in a position to say: What was the relationship between attainment and the amount of time pupils had been eligible for free school meals in 2019 (the latest year for which data is available)?
Applying Behavioural Insights to increase female students’ uptake of STEM subjects at A Level
Female students are much less likely than their male counterparts to take A levels in certain STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths) subjects. This is problematic for gender equality but also limits the country’s capacity to address the growing national STEM skills shortage. This research was commissioned to design and test the effectiveness of two sets of interventions based on behavioural insights theory, to increase the number of high-achieving female students choosing STEM subjects at A Level
